Discover the heart of Switzerland on this exhilarating, 8-day rail package. After you arrive in Switzerland, transfer to Lucerne by rail. Lucerne is a picturesque town located in Switzerland on the banks of Lake Lucerne. Explore the town’s popular landmarks including the Chapel Bridge, one of Europe’s oldest wooden bridges, the historic Musegg Wall including the clock at the Zyt Tower and more. From Lucerne, enjoy a cruise to Hergiswil aboard a paddle steamer. Head to the railway station where you will take the train towards Stans. From Stans, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes to the valley station of Stanserhorn Bahn. Enjoy a scenic train ride then board the first open top cable car, “CabriO”. Your epic journey continues to as you board the Golden Pass en route to Interlaken. From Interlaken, journey to Jungfraujoch by rail, Switzerland’s crowning jewel. Your Golden Pass itinerary continues to Montreux, a charming resort town located on the shores of Lake Geneva. From Montreux, board the world-famous Chocolate Train. This train ride will take you to Maison du Gruyere where the renowned Gruyeres cheese is made and Maison Cailler, a historic chocolate factory in Broc.

Itinerary

Day 1, Arrival in Switzerland – Lucerne
Arrival in Switzerland. Rail journey to Lucerne. Rest of the day at leisure. Overnight at your hotel in Lucerne.

Day 2, Lucerne – Mountain excursion in Stanserhorn
Breakfast at the hotel. Full day excursion to the Stanserhorn. In the morning, you board a paddle steamer from the main pier opposite the railway station and cruise to Hergiswil. A short walk to the railway station where you connect to a train towards Stans. From the station in Stans it takes about 5-10 minutes right across the old town to the valley station of the Stanserhorn Bahn.

For the first section, you take a vintage railway dating from 1830 and then - an extreme contrast - the world’s first open top cable car “CabriO”. The open upper deck and large glass front are truly breath-taking and spectacular. Up on the summit you can do the circular hiking trail (approximately 30 minutes). The Stanserhorn Rangers, are volunteers working on the mountain and will explain everything about the mountain and they know a lot of stories to tell.

In the afternoon, return to Lucerne with a direct train from Stans (approximately 20 minutes). Evening at leisure.

Day 3, Lucerne – Interlaken (Golden Pass)
Breakfast at the hotel. Depart from historic Lucerne and enjoy the first part of the Golden Pass route over the Brünig Pass to Interlaken, passing blue lakes, green meadows and age-old chalets along the way. After arrival in Interlaken, short walk to your hotel.

Day 4, Interlaken – Jungfraujoch
Breakfast at the hotel. The journey to the Jungfraujoch at 3,454 meters - Europe’s highest altitude railway station - is a highlight of every visit to Switzerland. The Jungfrau Railways is an engineering masterpiece. The last section has been built inside the mountain itself, and the view through the panorama windows at the "Eigerwand" and "Eismeer" stations in the middle of the North Wall are a thrilling experience. The platform of the observatory is located right above the Aletsch Glacier. The "Alpine Sensation" a subway inside the rock marks the centenary of the Jungfrau Railway and connects the Ice Paradise with the Sphinx Hall.

Late afternoon return to Interlaken. Overnight at your hotel.

Day 5, Interlaken – Jungrau region
Breakfast at hotel. Full day at leisure. Your rail ticket includes a half-fare card which offers 50% discount on most mountain railways in the area. There's a variety of optional excursions to choose from: Trümmelbach Falls, Brienzer Rothorn, Lake cruise, Harder Kulm, Schynige Platte.

Overnight at your hotel in Interlaken.

Day 6, Interlaken – Montreux (Golden Pass)
Breakfast at hotel.

The Golden Pass line is one of the most picturesque in Switzerland. Split into three distinct sections the ever changing scenery truly reflects Switzerland’s diversity. From Interlaken Ost the route continues to Zweisimmen following first the banks of Lake Thun before heading into the green Alpine pastures of the Simmental. Traditional villages, flowering meadows pass by before the train reaches Zweisimmen where passengers need to change to a different gauge train. Through alpine forests and mountain villages the journey continues, passing through a tunnel to emerge in the vineyards of the Lake Geneva region with beautiful views of the lake.

Overnight in Montreux.

Day 7, Montreux (Chocolate Train)
Breakfast at hotel. Full day excursion to Gruyères and Broc on the famous Chocolate Train. Spend a delightful day travelling in the vintage Belle Époque style cars or the modern panoramic carriages with the Swiss Chocolate Train! A morning departure from Montreux takes you up through the UNESCO protected vineyards, with awe-inspiring views over Lake Geneva towards the French Alps on the far side. The picturesque village of Gruyères awaits you first, with a stroll through the old town to the traditional cheese dairy where the world renowned Gruyères cheese is still created today. A tour of the modern dairy lets you try a sample before your onward journey to charming Broc, home of the Cailler chocolate factory. An indulgent afternoon awaits touring the chocolate factory and trying the delicious Swiss chocolate!

Late afternoon return to Montreux. Overnight at your hotel in Montreux.

Day 8, Departure
Breakfast at hotel. Departure rail transfer to airport or Swiss border.
